Where places are named Wolkendorf, Honigberg, and Wurmloch, one might expect tranquility, and indeed, in Transylvania, it is. However, today's idyllic appearance is deceptive: for centuries, this region was the scene of bloody power struggles, devastating invasions, murderous burning, and pillaging – hence the fortified churches (click on this introduction for further text).
